How Many Steps in a Mile? Chart by Height for Walking and Running

Health & FitnessUpdated October 4, 20267 min readBy ToolsVortex Editorial Team

Most adults take about 2,000 to 2,500 steps to walk one mile, and about 1,300 to 1,700 steps when running. Your exact number depends on stride length, which comes mostly from your height and pace. A 5’8″ walker averages roughly 2,250 steps per mile, so 10,000 steps is about 4.4 miles.

Your phone counts steps, but most goals are set in miles. Converting between the two is easy once you know your stride length. Below you’ll find a chart by height, the exact formula, and a quick test to find your personal number in under five minutes.

How many steps are in a mile on average?

In a treadmill study published in the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal (2008), adults averaged 2,252 steps per mile at a 20-minute-mile pace (3 mph) and 1,935 steps at a 15-minute-mile pace (4 mph). At a running pace of 8 minutes per mile, the average dropped to about 1,400 steps.

That’s why “about 2,000 steps per mile” is a fair shortcut for brisk walking, and closer to 2,300 for a relaxed stroll.

    Steps per mile by height

A common rule of thumb puts walking stride length at about 41% of your height, and running stride at about 65%. Here is what that means in practice:

    HeightWalking strideSteps / mile (walk)Steps / mile (run)10,000 steps =
    5’0″24.8 in2,5511,6253.9 mi
    5’2″25.7 in2,4681,5724.1 mi
    5’4″26.5 in2,3911,5234.2 mi
    5’6″27.3 in2,3191,4774.3 mi
    5’8″28.2 in2,2511,4334.4 mi
    5’10”29.0 in2,1861,3934.6 mi
    6’0″29.8 in2,1261,3544.7 mi
    6’2″30.6 in2,0681,3174.8 mi

Estimates use stride = height × 0.414 for walking and × 0.65 for running. Your real stride can differ by 10% or more, so measure it if accuracy matters.

    The formula: steps per mile

Steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ stride length (inches)
Miles = steps ÷ steps per mile
    Stride (walking) ≈ height (inches) × 0.414
    Worked example

    Maria is a 5’4″ nurse in Columbus, Ohio. Her height is 64 inches, so her walking stride is about 64 × 0.414 = 26.5 inches. That gives 63,360 ÷ 26.5 ≈ 2,391 steps per mile. On a 12,000-step shift she covers 12,000 ÷ 2,391 ≈ 5.0 miles.

Walking vs. running: why the numbers change

Speed changes stride length more than anything else. As you go faster, each step reaches further, so you need fewer steps for the same mile.

    • Slow walk (about 2 mph): short strides, often 2,400 to 2,600 steps per mile.
    • Brisk walk (3 to 4 mph): about 1,900 to 2,300 steps per mile.
    • Running (6 to 8 mph): roughly 1,300 to 1,700 steps per mile, depending on height and speed.

Hills, stairs, uneven trails and carrying a bag all shorten your stride, so the same distance takes more steps.

How to measure your own stride in 5 minutes

    1. Find a measured distance. One lap of a standard 400-meter running track is about a quarter mile. A football field is 100 yards (300 feet) between goal lines.
    2. Walk it at your normal pace and count every step.
    3. Divide the distance by your steps. For a track lap, multiply your step count by 4 to get steps per mile.
    4. Enter your stride in our steps to miles calculator to convert any step count.

    What about calories?

Steps are distance; calories depend mostly on your body weight and pace. A 160 lb person walking at 3 mph burns roughly 130 calories in 30 minutes. Use our walking calories calculator for your own numbers, and our water intake calculator if you’re upping your daily walks.

    Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile walking?

About 2,000 to 2,500 steps for most adults. Taller people and faster walkers take fewer steps, shorter people and slower walkers take more.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

Roughly 4 to 5 miles. At an average of about 2,250 steps per mile, 10,000 steps is about 4.4 miles.

How many steps are in a mile running?

Usually about 1,300 to 1,700. Running strides are much longer than walking strides, so you need fewer of them.

How do I find my own steps per mile?

Walk a measured distance, such as one lap of a standard 400-meter track (about a quarter mile), count your steps and multiply by four. Or divide 63,360 by your stride length in inches.

Is 10,000 steps a day a good goal?

It is a popular target rather than an official rule. The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, such as brisk walking, each week for adults.
