Find out how far your steps take you. Uses your height and pace to estimate stride length, then converts steps to miles and kilometers.

Step counters on phones and watches show steps, but most fitness goals and running routes are measured in miles or kilometers. The missing link is your stride length, which depends mainly on your height and on whether you’re walking or running. This calculator estimates it from your height, or you can enter a stride you’ve measured yourself for a more exact result.
How many steps are in a mile?
For an average adult walking, a mile is about 2,000 to 2,500 steps. Taller people take fewer, longer steps, and running cuts the count to around 1,400 to 1,700. Enter your height above to get your own number.
How the estimate works
Running stride ≈ height × 0.65
Distance = steps × stride length
The 0.414 ratio is a widely used rule of thumb for walking stride. A 170 cm person gets a stride of about 70 cm, so 10,000 steps is roughly 7 km or 4.4 miles. Your real stride changes with speed, terrain and fatigue, so treat the result as a good estimate.
Steps per mile by height (walking)
| Height | Stride | Steps per mile | 10,000 steps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 152 cm (5′0″) | 63 cm | ≈ 2,557 | 3.9 mi / 6.3 km |
| 163 cm (5′4″) | 67 cm | ≈ 2,385 | 4.2 mi / 6.7 km |
| 173 cm (5′8″) | 72 cm | ≈ 2,247 | 4.5 mi / 7.2 km |
| 183 cm (6′0″) | 76 cm | ≈ 2,124 | 4.7 mi / 7.6 km |
How to measure your own stride
Walk 10 normal steps on a flat surface, measure the distance from where you started to where your toe ended, and divide by 10. Enter that number in the stride box for a result that fits you exactly.
How to use the Steps to Miles Calculator
Enter your steps
Type the steps from your phone or watch. 10,000 is filled in as an example.

Enter your height
Type your height in inches (5 ft 7 in = 67 in) or switch to cm. The stride length updates automatically.

Choose walking or running
Running strides are longer, so the same steps cover more distance.

Read the distance
Miles appear in large text, with kilometers and your steps per mile and per km underneath.
