Date & TimeUpdated November 5, 20268 min readBy ToolsVortex Editorial Team

A year has 52 weeks and 1 day (365 days), or 52 weeks and 2 days in a leap year (366 days). In decimals that is 52.14 and 52.29 weeks. Under the ISO week system, most years have 52 numbered weeks, but some have 53. 2026 is one of them.

How Many Weeks in a Year? 52 or 53, Plus Week Numbers and Paychecks

Ask how many weeks in a year and most people say 52. That is close, but a year is never exactly 52 weeks. There is always a day or two left over, and those spare days decide whether your calendar shows 52 or 53 week numbers and whether you get an extra paycheck.

This guide gives the exact counts, a list of upcoming 53 week years, the weeks in each month, and how weekly and biweekly pay schedules handle the leftover days. To look up the week number of any date, use our week number calculator.

How Many Weeks Are in a Year?

A year has 52 full weeks plus 1 extra day, or 52 full weeks plus 2 extra days in a leap year.

The math is simple. 52 weeks x 7 days = 364 days. A common year has 365 days, so one day is left over. A leap year has 366, so two are left over.

Year typeDaysWeeks (exact)Full weeks + extra days
    Common year36552.142952 weeks + 1 day
    Leap year36652.285752 weeks + 2 days
    Gregorian average365.242552.177552 weeks + 1.2425 days

The Gregorian average comes from the US Naval Observatory, which gives the calendar year an average length of 365.2425 days.

So if a form asks for “weeks per year,” 52 is the standard answer. If you need precision, for example to spread a yearly cost over weeks, use 52.14 for a normal year.

How Many Weeks Are in a Year Exactly?

A common year is exactly 52.1429 weeks, a leap year is 52.2857 weeks, and the long run average is 52.1775 weeks.

Weeks in a year = days in the year / 7
    Common year = 365 / 7 = 52.1429
    Leap year = 366 / 7 = 52.2857

Leap years follow a rule that many people only half know. The US Naval Observatory states it this way: years evenly divisible by 4 are leap years, except century years that are not evenly divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, but 2100 will not be. That rule is why the average Gregorian calendar year is 365.2425 days and not 365.25.

A full 400 year Gregorian cycle has 146,097 days. Divide by 7 and you get exactly 20,871 weeks. That is why the calendar repeats its weekday pattern every 400 years.

Does a Year Have 52 or 53 Weeks?

Most years have 52 numbered weeks, but about 1 year in every 5 or 6 has 53 under the ISO 8601 week system.

ISO 8601 is the international standard for writing dates. Its week rules, as Google’s ISOWEEKNUM help page puts them, are: weeks begin on Monday and end on Sunday, and week 1 is the week containing the first Thursday of the year. Because of that Thursday rule, a year gets a week 53 when it starts on a Thursday, or when it is a leap year that starts on a Wednesday.

    2030TuesdayNoTuesday52
    2031WednesdayNoWednesday52
    2032ThursdayYesThursday, Friday53
    2033SaturdayNoSaturday52

We counted every year with code. In one full 400 year cycle, 71 years have 53 ISO weeks and 329 have 52.

The “53 times” column is a separate idea. In 2026, there are 53 Thursdays but only 52 of every other weekday. In leap years, two weekdays get the bonus. That column is what decides how many weekly paydays or weekly meetings land in the year.

When Is Week 53 in 2026?

ISO week 53 of 2026 runs from Monday, December 28, 2026 to Sunday, January 3, 2027.

That means January 1, 2 and 3 of 2027 are still part of week 53 of 2026. The first week of 2027 starts on Monday, January 4. The same thing happens at the start of 2026 in reverse: Monday, December 29, 2025 was already the first day of week 1 of 2026.

This trips people up in planning software, shipping schedules and payroll reports. If a report groups data by ISO week, those first January days get counted in the old year. Always check which week system a tool uses before you compare week numbers across countries or apps. The week number lookup shows the ISO week for any date.

    A different system: Sunday weeks

Some calendars and spreadsheet settings start weeks on Sunday and call the week that holds January 1 week 1, no matter which day it is. With that method, a year almost always touches 53 week numbers, because the first and last weeks are partial. A leap year that starts on a Saturday, like 2028, even reaches 54. Neither system is wrong. They answer different questions.

How Many Weeks Are in a Month?

An average month has about 4.35 weeks, which is 52.14 weeks divided by 12.

No month is exactly 4.35 weeks. A 31 day month is 4 weeks and 3 days. A 30 day month is 4 weeks and 2 days. Only February in a common year is exactly 4 weeks.

    Month (2026)DaysWeeks (decimal)Full weeks + days

    February284.004 weeks exactly
    March314.434 weeks + 3 days

    May314.434 weeks + 3 days
    June304.294 weeks + 2 days
    July314.434 weeks + 3 days
    August314.434 weeks + 3 days
    September304.294 weeks + 2 days
    October314.434 weeks + 3 days
    November304.294 weeks + 2 days
    December314.434 weeks + 3 days

February 2026 has 28 days, so it is the only month this year with exactly 4 weeks. In leap years like 2028 it has 4 weeks and 1 day.

A quarter is often called 13 weeks, which is 91 days. In 2026 the real quarters run 90, 91, 92 and 92 days, so Q1 is one day short and Q3 and Q4 are one day long. To count the exact days in any span, use the days between dates calculator.

How Many Paychecks Are in a Year?

Weekly pay gives you 52 paychecks in most years and 53 in some, and biweekly pay gives you 26 in most years and 27 in some.

The extra paycheck comes from the leftover day or two. If you are paid every Friday, you get 53 paychecks in any year with 53 Fridays. From 2025 to 2033, that happens in 2027 and 2032. For biweekly pay, the 27th payday appears about once every 11 years, and the exact year depends on your employer’s start date. For example, a Friday biweekly schedule with a payday on January 2, 2026 lands paydays on both January 1 and December 31, 2027, so 2027 gets 27.

    Worked example

Jordan is paid weekly and wants to set aside money each week for a $1,200 monthly rent payment.

    1. Yearly rent: $1,200 x 12 = $14,400.
    2. Weekly amount using 52 weeks: $14,400 / 52 = $276.92 per week.
    3. If Jordan used the “4 weeks a month” habit instead: $1,200 / 4 = $300 per week.
    4. Over 52 weeks that is $300 x 52 = $15,600, which is $1,200 more than the rent needs.
    5. In a 53 paycheck year, setting aside $276.92 every week adds one more deposit, for 53 x $276.92 = $14,676.76 saved.

Saving $300 a week is not harmful, but it ties up an extra month of rent. Using 52 weeks gives the true weekly cost.

To turn a salary into an hourly rate, the hourly to salary guide explains why 52 weeks x 40 hours gives 2,080 hours. For how holidays shrink that number, see how many work days are in a year. This is general information, not financial advice. Check your own pay calendar with HR or payroll.

    Quick Recap

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is a year 52 or 53 weeks?

A year is 52 full weeks plus 1 or 2 days. When you count numbered weeks with the ISO 8601 system, most years have 52 weeks, but years that start on a Thursday, and leap years that start on a Wednesday, have 53.

How many weeks are in 2026?

2026 has 365 days, which is 52 weeks and 1 day. It also has 53 ISO weeks, because it starts on a Thursday. Week 53 runs from December 28, 2026 to January 3, 2027.

How many weeks are in a leap year?

A leap year has 366 days, which is 52 weeks and 2 days, or 52.29 weeks. Whether it has 52 or 53 ISO weeks depends on the weekday it starts on. 2028 has 52, while 2032 has 53.

How many weeks are in a month on average?

About 4.35 weeks. Divide 52.14 weeks by 12 months to get it. Real months run from exactly 4 weeks in a 28 day February to 4 weeks and 3 days in a 31 day month.

How many work weeks are in a year?

There are 52 weeks in a year, so a full-time schedule is usually counted as 52 work weeks. Paid holidays and vacation days reduce the time you actually spend working, so the real number of weeks on the job is lower.

What is the next year with 53 weeks?

Under ISO 8601, 2026 has 53 weeks. After that, the next 53 week years are 2032 and 2037. We checked each year from 2025 to 2040 with code using the ISO Thursday rule.

Why do some years have 27 biweekly paychecks?

Each year has one or two days beyond 52 weeks. Those days slowly shift the payday schedule until a year starts and ends with a payday. Then the year holds 27 biweekly paydays instead of 26.

How Many Work Days in a Year? 2025 to 2028 Counts and Hours

Date & TimeUpdated October 28, 20268 min readBy ToolsVortex Editorial Team

Most years have 261 weekdays (Monday to Friday). Some have 260 and a few leap years have 262. Subtract the 11 US federal holidays and a full-time worker gets about 250 work days, which is 2,000 hours at 8 hours a day. In 2026 the count is exactly 250.

How Many Work Days in a Year? 2025 to 2028 Counts and Hours

If you want to know how many work days in a year you really have, the short answer is about 250. The long answer depends on which weekday January 1 falls on, whether it is a leap year, and how holidays land on the calendar.

We counted every weekday from 2025 to 2028 with code, then removed the US federal holidays using the official observed dates. You will also see a month by month count for 2026, the hours behind the 2,080 and 2,087 figures, and how to subtract your own vacation days. To count any custom range, use our date calculator.

How Many Work Days Are in a Year?

A normal year has 261 weekdays, and after the 11 US federal holidays you are left with about 250 work days.

Here is the count for the next few years. “Weekdays” means every Monday to Friday. “Holidays” means federal holidays whose observed date lands on a weekday inside that calendar year.

YearJan 1 falls onTotal daysWeekdaysFederal holidaysNet work daysHours at 8 a day
    2025Wednesday365261112502,000
    2026Thursday365261112502,000
    2027Friday365261122491,992
    2028Saturday366260102502,000

2027 has 12 holidays because New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. That also leaves 2028 with only 10. In 2025, an executive order also closed federal offices on December 24 and 26, so federal staff actually worked 248 days that year.

Private employers do not have to follow the federal list. They pick their own paid holidays. If your company gives 8 paid holidays that all land on weekdays, 2026 has 261 minus 8 = 253 work days for you. Check your employee handbook for the exact list, then subtract only the ones that fall Monday to Friday. A holiday that lands on a Saturday may or may not move to Friday at a private company, so ask HR how they handle it.

Why Do Some Years Have 260, 261 or 262 Weekdays?

The number of weekdays changes because 365 days is 52 weeks plus 1 extra day, and a leap year is 52 weeks plus 2 extra days.

Those 52 full weeks always hold 260 weekdays (52 x 5). The leftover day or days decide the rest. The extra day is always the same weekday as January 1. In a leap year, the day after it gets an extra turn too.

Weekdays = 260 + extra days that fall Monday to Friday
    Common year = 52 weeks + 1 day
    Leap year = 52 weeks + 2 days
YearLeap year?Weekday(s) that occur 53 timesWeekdays

    2025NoWednesday261
    2026NoThursday261
    2027NoFriday261
    2028YesSaturday, Sunday260

In 2028 both extra days are weekend days, so the weekday count drops back to the minimum of 260.

We checked a full 28 year span (2001 to 2028). It had 17 years with 261 weekdays, 7 with 260 and 4 with 262. You can see which weekday a year starts on with the day of the week calculator.

Which Federal Holidays Reduce Work Days?

Eleven legal public holidays in federal law reduce the work year, and each one counts only when its observed date falls on a weekday.

The list in 5 U.S.C. 6103 is New Year’s Day, Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Juneteenth was the newest, added in 2021.

    The weekend rule

Six holidays are tied to a weekday, such as “third Monday in January,” so they never land on a weekend. The five fixed date holidays (January 1, June 19, July 4, November 11 and December 25) can. When one falls on a Saturday, federal workers get the Friday before. When it falls on a Sunday, they get the Monday after. That is why the holiday never “disappears” from a Monday to Friday schedule.

    • 2026: July 4 is a Saturday, so the holiday is Friday, July 3.
    • 2027: June 19 and December 25 are Saturdays, so the days off are June 18 and December 24. July 4 is a Sunday, so July 5 is off.
    • 2028: November 11 is a Saturday, so Veterans Day is observed Friday, November 10.

How Many Work Days Are in Each Month of 2026?

Months in 2026 range from 19 to 22 work days once federal holidays come out.

March and April have no federal holidays, so they tie with July and December for the most work days. February and November have the fewest.

This matters for monthly targets. If you bill by the day, February 2026 gives you 3 fewer days than March. For any two dates, the days between dates calculator gives you the gap in calendar days.

How Many Work Hours Are in a Year?

The standard answer is 2,080 hours a year, which is 52 weeks times 40 hours.

    That number is a shortcut. The real count of weekday hours is 261 x 8 = 2,088 hours in 2025, 2026 and 2027, but only 260 x 8 = 2,080 in 2028. Leap years with 262 weekdays reach 2,096.

Why the federal government uses 2,087

The Office of Personnel Management tells agencies to divide annual pay by 2,087 hours to get the hourly rate for almost all civilian federal employees. The figure comes from a 1981 GAO study of a 28 year cycle. It is the average number of paid hours per year over that cycle. We ran the same check on 2001 to 2028 and got 7,305 weekdays, or 2,087.1 hours a year on average.

    Paid hours = weekdays x 8
Hours actually worked = (weekdays minus holidays minus PTO days) x 8
Hourly rate (federal) = annual salary / 2,087

Most private payroll systems still use 2,080. If you are converting a wage, our hourly to salary calculator handles the math, and the hourly to salary guide explains when 2,080 is the right divisor. This is general information, not financial advice.

How Do You Subtract Vacation and Sick Days?

Start with the net work days for your year, then subtract every paid day off you plan to take.

    Worked example

Maria works full time, Monday to Friday, in 2026. Her employer follows the federal holiday list and gives her 15 days of paid time off.

    1. Weekdays in 2026: 261.
    2. Minus 11 federal holidays: 261 minus 11 = 250 work days.
    3. Minus 15 PTO days: 250 minus 15 = 235 days at work.
    4. Hours at work: 235 x 8 = 1,880 hours.
    5. Paid hours, since holidays and PTO are paid: 261 x 8 = 2,088. At $25 an hour that is 2,088 x $25 = $52,200.

Maria is paid for 2,088 hours but only works 1,880 of them. If a salary offer quotes $52,000 using 2,080 hours, the extra $200 she sees here comes from the 261st weekday.

A few edge cases change the count:

    • Part time: a 4 day week has about 4/5 of the weekdays. Count only your scheduled days.
    • Shift workers: if your week is not Monday to Friday, federal law moves a holiday that hits your day off to another day, so count your own schedule.
    • Unpaid days: unpaid leave lowers paid hours, not just hours worked.
    • Floating holidays: treat them like PTO days.

You can add or subtract business days from any start date with the date calculator.

    Quick Recap

    • Most years have 261 weekdays; leap years can have 260 or 262.
    • Take out 11 federal holidays and you get about 250 work days.
    • 2027 has 249 work days because New Year’s Day 2028 is observed on Dec 31, 2027.
    • Standard full-time hours are 2,080; OPM uses 2,087 for federal hourly rates.
    • Subtract your PTO days to find the days you actually work.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many work days are in 2026?

2026 has 261 weekdays. After the 11 US federal holidays, all of which fall on weekdays in 2026, you have 250 work days. At 8 hours a day that is 2,000 hours of work time.

How many work days are in a month on average?

Divide 250 work days by 12 months and you get about 20.8 work days per month. In 2026 the real range runs from 19 days in February and November to 22 days in March, April, July and December.

Why is 2,080 the standard number of work hours?

It is 52 weeks times 40 hours. It ignores the extra one or two days that make a year longer than 52 weeks, so the true count of weekday hours is often 2,088.

Do federal holidays count as work days for private companies?

Not by law. Private employers choose their own paid holidays. A company with 8 paid weekday holidays would have 253 work days in 2026, while one that follows all 11 federal holidays would have 250.

What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend?

For federal workers on a Monday to Friday schedule, a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after. In 2026, July 4 is a Saturday, so Friday, July 3 is the day off.

How many weekdays are in a leap year?

A leap year has 366 days, which is 52 weeks plus 2 days. It has 262 weekdays if both extra days are weekdays, 261 if one is, and 260 if both are Saturday and Sunday, as in 2028.

How many hours does a federal employee work in a year?

OPM sets the divisor at 2,087 hours for computing hourly pay. That is the average number of paid weekday hours over a 28 year cycle, not a count for any single year.
