Age Difference Calculator on ToolsVortex with a worked example filled in
Age Difference Calculator: 15 March 1990 and 2 August 1994 shown as 4 years, 4 months, 18 days apart.

This age difference calculator is for siblings, couples, parents, teachers and anyone curious about the gap between two people. Type two birth dates and you get the difference counted on the calendar, the exact number of days between them, and a plain sentence that says who is older.

How Do You Calculate the Age Difference Between Two People?

Subtract the earlier birth date from the later one. Count whole years first, then whole months, then the leftover days. For example, birth dates of 15 March 1990 and 2 August 1994 are 4 years, 4 months and 18 days apart, which is 1,601 days in total, so the first person is older.

How Is the Age Gap Counted in Years, Months and Days?

The age gap is counted by stepping forward from the older birth date in whole calendar years, then whole months, then single days until you reach the younger birth date. This is the same way you would count an age on a birthday card, and it follows the Gregorian calendar, the civil calendar used in most of the world.

gap = later date − earlier date
years and months: largest step that does not pass the later date
days = later date − (earlier date + years + months)

A calendar month is not a fixed length. It can be 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, so “1 month” after 31 January lands on the last day of February. The tool handles this by moving to the last valid day of a short month before counting the leftover days. Dates are entered in the ISO 8601 order of year, month and day, which avoids mixing up the US and UK date styles.

Why Do Total Days Not Match Years Times 365?

Total days do not match years times 365 because a leap year adds 29 February every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400. Between 1901 and 2099, every 4 year gap contains exactly one 29 February, so it is 1,461 days rather than 1,460. That is also why the tool shows decimal years as total days divided by 365.2425, the average length of a Gregorian year. If you only need the count of days between any two dates, the days between dates calculator does that directly.

Does the Age Difference Between Two People Ever Change?

No, the age difference between two people never changes, because both get older at the same rate. If you are 4 years, 4 months and 18 days older than your brother today, you will still be that much older in 50 years. What does change is how the gap feels: 4 years is a big gap between a 6 year old and a 2 year old, but small between adults aged 40 and 44. To see one person’s own age today, use the age calculator.

What Happens With a 29 February Birthday?

A 29 February birthday is counted to 28 February in non-leap years, because that is the last valid day of the month. So from 29 February 2016 to 15 January 2018 the gap is 1 year, 10 months and 17 days, or 686 days. Twins or two people born on the same day show a gap of 0 days.

Worked Example

Sam was born on 15 March 1990 and Alex on 2 August 1994. Enter both dates and the tool shows 4 years, 4 months, 18 days, with the line “Sam is older than Alex by 1,601 days”. The boxes show 228 weeks and 5 days, 52 total months and 4.38 decimal years. The working line explains it: from 15 Mar 1990, add 4 years and 4 months to reach 15 Jul 1994, then 18 more days to reach 2 Aug 1994. To find the weekday each person was born on, try the day of the week calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 10 year age difference big?

It depends on age. A 10 year gap between a 15 and a 25 year old is very large, while between people aged 50 and 60 it matters much less. The gap in days never changes, only how it compares to each person's age.

How many days are in a 5 year age gap?

A 5 year age gap is 1,826 or 1,827 days, depending on how many 29 February dates fall inside it. For birth dates between 1901 and 2099, five years always include at least one leap day, so it is never just 5 times 365, which is 1,825.

Does the order of the two dates matter?

No. The tool always counts from the earlier birth date to the later one, so you can enter the dates in any order. The sentence under the result tells you which person is older and by how many days.

Why is 31 January to 1 March only 1 month and 1 day?

Adding 1 month to 31 January lands on the last day of February, because February has no 31st. In 2000 that was 29 February, and 1 March is 1 day later. The total gap is 30 days.

Can I use this for people born more than 100 years apart?

Yes. Any two past dates from the year 1000 onwards work, so you can compare a grandparent and a grandchild or two historical figures. Dates in the future show an error, since a birth date cannot be after today.

What are decimal years in the result?

Decimal years are total days divided by 365.2425, the average Gregorian year. A gap of 1,601 days is about 4.38 years. It is handy for charts or spreadsheets where a single number is easier than years, months and days.
