This word unscrambler takes a jumble of letters and lists every common English word you can spell with them, grouped by length, with the Scrabble score of each word. It is for word game players, crossword fans and teachers. Add ? for a blank tile, set a shortest length, or ask for words that contain certain letters.
How Do You Unscramble Letters Into Words?
To unscramble letters, the tool checks each word in a 20,000 word English list and keeps it if every letter can come from your tiles, with each tile used once. For example, the letters L, I, S, T, E, N make 42 words: listen, silent and enlist at 6 letters, plus 39 shorter words such as inlet and tiles.
How Does a Word Unscrambler Find Every Word?
It counts the letters you have and keeps every word from its list that needs no more of any letter than you hold.
A word made by rearranging all the letters of another word is an anagram, like listen and silent. A word unscrambler goes further and also finds shorter words, which is what you need in games such as Scrabble and Words With Friends. The check is a simple letter count, done for all 20,000 words in a fraction of a second:
letters short ≤ number of ? blanks
score = sum of the tile values of the letters you really hold
A blank tile (type ?) can stand for any letter but is worth 0 points, so the score only counts letters taken from real tiles.
How Many Points Is Each Letter Worth in Scrabble?
In English Scrabble, each letter score runs from 1 point for common letters like E and S up to 10 points for Q and Z.
| Points | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R |
| 2 | D, G |
| 3 | B, C, M, P |
| 4 | F, H, V, W, Y |
| 5 | K |
| 8 | J, X |
| 10 | Q, Z |
| 0 | Blank tile (?) |
The scores shown are face values only. Board bonuses such as double word squares and the 50 point bonus for using all 7 tiles are not added, because they depend on where you play. For example, zebra is worth 10 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 16 points.
Which Word List Does This Tool Use?
It uses 20,000 common English words taken from SCOWL, the Spell Checker Oriented Word Lists by Kevin Atkinson, as shipped in the Hunspell en_US spelling dictionary used by LibreOffice and Firefox.
To keep the page small, words were ranked by word frequency with the open wordfreq project and the most common 20,000 that pass the spell checker were kept. Names, abbreviations and offensive words were removed. Rare words that appear in official tournament lists, such as qi and za, are not included, so a word missing here may still be legal in your game. To count letters in a longer draft, the character counter is a better fit, and for random practice words try the random word generator.
Can I Use a Word Unscrambler for Wordle and Crosswords?
Yes. For a crossword or Wordle guess, set the shortest word to 5 letters and use the must contain box for letters you already know. For example, the letters tenis with “st” in the must contain box give only stein and nest.
Worked Example
A Scrabble player holds the tiles L, I, S, T, E, N. Typing listen in the tool finds 42 words: 3 six letter words (enlist, listen, silent), 4 five letter words (inlet, lines, stein, tiles), 19 four letter words, 13 three letter words and 3 two letter words. Every letter here is worth 1 point, so the best score is enlist at 6 points before board bonuses. Swap one tile for a blank by typing qu?ck and the tool finds 17 words, with quick on top at 19 points, because Q is 10, C is 3 and K is 5, while the blank standing in for I scores 0.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many words can you make from the letters in listen?
This tool finds 42 words from L, I, S, T, E, N. The longest are enlist, listen and silent at 6 letters. There are also 4 five letter words, 19 four letter words, 13 three letter words and 3 two letter words.
Does the unscrambler use every letter I type?
No. It lists words that use all of your letters and words that use only some of them. Each tile can be used once per word, so two E tiles are needed for a word like tree.
How do blank tiles work in the word unscrambler?
Type a question mark for each blank tile, up to 3. A blank can become any letter but scores 0 points, as in Scrabble. For example, qu?ck finds quick, with the blank used as the I.
Why is a Scrabble word missing from the results?
The tool uses a list of 20,000 common English words, not an official tournament dictionary with over 100,000 entries. Rare game words such as qi, za and xu are left out, so check your official word list before a challenge.
Are the Scrabble scores the final points for a move?
No. They are the face values of the letters only. Premium squares such as double letter or triple word, plus the 50 point bonus for playing all 7 tiles, are added on the board.
What is the difference between an anagram and an unscrambled word?
An anagram uses every letter exactly once, so silent is an anagram of listen. An unscrambled word may use only some letters, so tile and net also come from listen but are not anagrams.
