Dog Pregnancy Calculator on ToolsVortex with a worked example filled in
Dog Pregnancy Calculator: mated 1 September 2026, due Tuesday 3 November 2026, now on day 39 of week 6.

This dog pregnancy calculator is for owners and breeders who know when a female dog was mated and want to plan for the puppies. You get the estimated due date, the normal whelping window, the current day and week of pregnancy, and a dated week by week timeline of vet checks and milestones.

How Long Is a Dog Pregnant?

A dog is pregnant for about 63 days, or 9 weeks, counted from ovulation. Counted from the mating date, whelping usually falls between about day 58 and day 68, because sperm can survive for several days before the eggs are ready. A dog mated on 1 September 2026 is due around 3 November 2026.

How Is a Dog’s Due Date Calculated?

A dog’s due date is estimated by adding 63 days to the mating date, counting the mating day as day 0.

due date = mating date + 63 days
normal range = mating date + 58 to 68 days

The true gestation length is very steady when measured from hormone events: about 64 to 66 days from the LH surge and about 62 to 64 days from ovulation, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual. Mating dates are less exact. Sperm can live in the female for a week or more, and eggs need 2 to 3 days to mature after ovulation, so the window from the first accepted mating can run from 58 to 72 days. If she was mated more than once, count from the first mating and expect puppies toward the later end. Breeders who use progesterone blood tests to time ovulation can predict the date within a day or two.

What Happens Each Week of Dog Pregnancy?

Most changes you can see start after week 4, and most of the puppies’ growth happens in the last three weeks. The tool fills in real dates for each week:

WeekDaysWhat happens
11 to 7Fertilization. Eggs are fertilized in the oviducts and the embryos travel toward the uterus.
28 to 14Embryos reach the uterus. No outward signs yet.
315 to 21Embryos implant in the uterine wall, around day 18 to 21. Some dogs eat less for a few days.
422 to 28A vet ultrasound can often confirm pregnancy from about day 25; a vet may also feel the swellings by palpation.
529 to 35Puppies grow fast. Weight gain and a firmer belly may begin. A relaxin blood test is reliable from about this point.
636 to 42Start raising food gradually, by about 10% a week, using a puppy or growth formula as your vet advises.
743 to 49Puppy skeletons start to show on x-ray from about day 45. Nipples enlarge and the belly is clearly round.
850 to 56An x-ray around now is the best way to count puppies. Set up a quiet whelping box.
957 to 63Take her temperature twice a day. A drop below about 37.2 °C (99 °F) usually means labor within 24 hours.

How Can You Tell if a Dog Is Pregnant?

A vet can confirm a dog pregnancy by ultrasound from about day 25 to 28 after mating, by a relaxin blood test from about day 28 to 30, or by feeling the abdomen at 3 to 4 weeks. An x-ray after about day 45 shows the puppies’ skeletons and is the most accurate way to count them before birth. Home signs such as a bigger appetite, weight gain and larger nipples appear later and also happen in false pregnancy. Ask your vet about feeding: in the last three weeks a pregnant dog may need up to 1.5 times her normal food. To plan feeding after birth, the dog food calculator helps, and the puppy weight calculator tracks the litter’s growth.

Worked Example

Luna was mated on 1 September 2026. The tool adds 63 days and shows a due date of Tuesday 3 November 2026, with a normal range of 29 October to 8 November. On 10 October 2026 she is on day 39, week 6, with 24 days to go, so it is time to start raising her food. An x-ray to count puppies is possible from 16 October (day 45). A dog mated on 20 December 2026 would be due on 21 February 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a dog give birth at 58 days?

Yes. Counted from mating, puppies born from about day 58 are usually normal, because the mating may have happened a few days before ovulation. Puppies born much earlier than that may be premature and need a vet straight away.

What if my dog goes past 63 days?

Going a few days past day 63 from mating is common. Call your vet if there are no puppies by about day 68, if her temperature dropped more than 24 hours ago with no labor, or if she has green discharge with no puppy.

How many weeks is a dog pregnant?

About 9 weeks. Gestation is around 63 days from ovulation, which is 9 weeks exactly. From the mating date it can be anywhere from about 8 weeks 2 days to 9 weeks 5 days.

When can a vet confirm pregnancy in a dog?

An ultrasound can show pregnancy from about day 25 to 28 after mating. A relaxin blood test works from about day 28 to 30. An x-ray after about day 45 can count the puppies but does not confirm early pregnancy.

How do I know my dog is about to give birth?

Her rectal temperature usually drops below about 37.2 °C (99 °F), and labor tends to follow within 24 hours. She may also stop eating, pant, shiver, dig or nest. Take her temperature twice a day from day 57.

Is the mating date the same as conception?

No. Sperm can survive in a female dog for a week or more, so the eggs may be fertilized days after mating. That is why due dates counted from mating have a wider range than those based on progesterone tests.
