This decimal to percent converter helps students checking homework, shoppers reading discounts and anyone filling in a spreadsheet. Type a decimal and get the percent with the multiply by 100 step written out, or switch direction to turn a percent into a decimal. The tool moves the decimal point exactly, so you never see rounding noise like 7.000000001%.
How Do You Convert a Decimal to a Percent?
To convert a decimal to a percent, multiply it by 100 and add the % sign. This moves the decimal point 2 places to the right. For example, 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%, and 1.25 × 100 = 125%. To go back, divide the percent by 100, so 8.25% becomes 0.0825.
Why Do You Multiply by 100 to Get a Percent?
You multiply by 100 because percent means “per hundred”, from the Latin per centum, so 37.5% is just 37.5 out of 100. A decimal like 0.375 is a number out of 1, and scaling 1 up to 100 means multiplying both by 100.
decimal = percent ÷ 100
Each step uses place value: multiplying by 100 shifts every digit 2 places to the left on the place value chart, which looks like the decimal point moving 2 places right. Add zeros if you run out of digits, so 0.5 becomes 50% and 2 becomes 200%.
Decimal to Percent Conversion Table
These are the values people convert most often, checked with this tool:
| Decimal | Percent | Fraction |
|---|---|---|
| 0.005 | 0.5% | 1/200 |
| 0.01 | 1% | 1/100 |
| 0.07 | 7% | 7/100 |
| 0.1 | 10% | 1/10 |
| 0.125 | 12.5% | 1/8 |
| 0.375 | 37.5% | 3/8 |
| 0.5 | 50% | 1/2 |
| 0.75 | 75% | 3/4 |
| 1.25 | 125% | 5/4 |
| 2 | 200% | 2 |
How Do You Turn a Percent Back Into a Decimal?
To turn a percent into a decimal, remove the % sign and divide by 100, which moves the decimal point 2 places to the left. So 8.25% is 0.0825 and 150% is 1.5. This is the form you need for most formulas: a sales tax of 8.25% on $40 is 40 × 0.0825 = $3.30. For other percent questions, such as what percent one number is of another, use the percentage calculator.
Can a Percent Be More Than 100 or Negative?
Yes, a percent can be more than 100 whenever the decimal is greater than 1, and negative when the decimal is below 0. A price that rises from $40 to $50 is 1.25 times the old price, which is 125% of it, or a 25% increase. A change of −0.4 is −40%, a fall. The percentage increase calculator works out these changes from two values. The tool also shows per mille (‰), parts per thousand, which is the decimal times 1,000, and the matching fraction in simplest form, which you can check with the decimal to fraction calculator.
Worked Example
A student scores 0.375 of the marks on a quiz section. Enter 0.375 and the tool shows 37.5%, with the working 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%. The boxes show the fraction 3/8 and 375‰. Switch to Percent to decimal, type 8.25 and the result is 0.0825, with 8.25% ÷ 100 = 0.0825 and the fraction 33/400. Typing 1.25 in decimal mode gives 125%, shown as 5/4 = 1 1/4.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 0.07 as a percent?
0.07 as a percent is 7%. Multiply 0.07 by 100 to get 7, then add the % sign. A common mistake is writing 70%, which would be the decimal 0.7, ten times larger.
What is 1.5 as a percent?
1.5 as a percent is 150%. Multiply 1.5 by 100 to get 150. Any decimal larger than 1 gives a percent above 100%, meaning more than one whole, such as 1.5 times an original price.
How do I write 0.5% as a decimal?
0.5% as a decimal is 0.005. Divide 0.5 by 100, which moves the decimal point two places left. It is half of one percent, or 1/200, a size often seen in interest rates and fees.
What is 0.333 as a percent?
0.333 as a percent is 33.3%. Multiply by 100 to move the decimal point 2 places right. Note that 0.333 is not exactly one third; one third is 33.333…% with the 3 repeating forever.
Is 0.25 the same as 25%?
Yes. 0.25, 25% and 1/4 are three ways to write the same amount. Multiply 0.25 by 100 to get 25%, and 25 out of 100 simplifies to 1/4, one quarter.
Why does my calculator show 7.000000000000001%?
Computers store most decimals in binary, so 0.07 × 100 can pick up a tiny error. This converter moves the decimal point as text instead, so 0.07 always gives exactly 7% with no trailing digits.
