Ounces to Cups Converter: 12 US fluid ounces shown as 1.5 cups and 354.88 ml.

This ounces to cups converter is for cooks, bartenders and anyone reading a drink or recipe label. It divides fluid ounces by the number of ounces in one cup, which is 8 in the US and 10 in the UK imperial system, and also shows the same amount in ml so you can use a metric jug.

How Many Ounces Are in a Cup?

There are 8 US fluid ounces in one US cup, so to convert ounces to cups you divide by 8. For example, 12 fl oz divided by 8 is 1.5 cups, or about 354.88 ml. In the UK imperial system a cup is 10 imperial fluid ounces, so 12 fl oz is 1.2 imperial cups.

What Is the Formula for Ounces to Cups?

The formula is cups = fluid ounces ÷ 8 for US measures, and cups = fluid ounces ÷ 10 for UK imperial measures.

US: cups = fl oz ÷ 8   (1 US fl oz = 29.5735 ml)
UK: cups = fl oz ÷ 10   (1 imperial fl oz = 28.4131 ml)
cups to ounces: fl oz = cups × 8 (US) or × 10 (UK)

A US fluid ounce is 1/128 of a US gallon, about 29.57 ml, and the US customary cup holds 8 of them. An imperial fluid ounce is 1/20 of an imperial pint under the UK Weights and Measures Act, about 28.41 ml, so a half pint imperial cup holds 10 of them. The two ounces are close in size, but the cups are not.

What Is the Difference Between a Fluid Ounce and a Weight Ounce?

A fluid ounce measures volume, the space a liquid fills, while a weight ounce measures mass on a scale. The weight ounce is the avoirdupois ounce, exactly 28.349523125 grams. For water the two are nearly the same, because 8 fl oz of water weighs about 8.3 oz. For flour, sugar or oats they are very different: a cup of flour weighs far less than 8 ounces. If a recipe gives dry ingredients by weight, convert with the grams to ounces converter first and then use the grams to cups converter, which uses the density of each ingredient.

Worked Example

A smoothie recipe from the US calls for 12 fl oz of orange juice. Type 12 with US selected: the tool shows 1.5 cups (1 1/2 US cups), 354.88 ml, 0.75 pints and 24 tablespoons.
