Type a land area in hectares and get acres at once, or switch direction to turn acres into hectares. Square meters, square feet and square kilometers are shown too.
Uses 1 ha = 10,000 m² and 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m². Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

This hectares to acres converter is for farmers, land buyers, foresters and students who move between metric and imperial land records. Most of the world measures farmland in hectares, while the US and much UK property marketing still use acres. The tool works from the exact definitions, so the answer matches official tables.
How Do You Convert Hectares to Acres?
To convert hectares to acres, multiply by 2.471054, because one hectare is 10,000 square meters and one acre is 4,046.8564224 square meters. For example, a 12 hectare field × 2.471054 = 29.65 acres. To go back, multiply acres by 0.404686, so 40 acres is 16.19 hectares.
Why Is 1 Hectare Equal to 2.471 Acres?
One hectare is 2.471054 acres because a hectare is exactly 10,000 m² and an acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m², and 10,000 ÷ 4,046.8564224 = 2.4710538.
1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.8564224 m² (exact)
acres = hectares × 2.4710538
hectares = acres × 0.40468564
The hectare is a metric unit equal to one square hectometre, 100 m on each side. It is not an SI unit, but the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) accepts it for use with the SI, and it is the standard unit for land in the EU, Australia, India and most other countries. The acre is an imperial and US customary unit of 43,560 square feet. Since the 1959 definition of the international foot as 0.3048 m, the acre has an exact metric size.
What Is a Good Hectares to Acres Chart?
This chart covers common field and farm sizes, using values from the tool:
| Hectares | Acres | Acres | Hectares |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.1 | 0.2471 | 1 | 0.4047 |
| 0.5 | 1.2355 | 5 | 2.0234 |
| 1 | 2.4711 | 10 | 4.0469 |
| 2 | 4.9421 | 40 | 16.1874 |
| 5 | 12.3553 | 100 | 40.4686 |
| 10 | 24.7105 | 160 | 64.7497 |
| 50 | 123.5527 | 640 | 258.9988 |
| 100 | 247.1054 | 1,000 | 404.6856 |
Why Do Land Records Use Both Units?
Land records use both units because the US and parts of the UK kept the acre for property, while farm statistics and most other countries switched to the metric hectare.
In the UK, official farm data from the government is published in hectares, but many estate agents still advertise land in acres. In the US the acre is used almost everywhere. When you compare a price per acre with a price per hectare, convert the price too: a price per hectare divided by 2.4711 gives the price per acre.
Is a Hectare Bigger Than an Acre?
Yes, a hectare is about two and a half times bigger than an acre, so the number of acres is always larger than the number of hectares for the same land.
A quick mental estimate is to multiply hectares by 2.5 and take off 1 percent; 12 ha × 2.5 = 30, minus 1 percent gives 29.7 acres, close to the exact 29.65. A standard football pitch of 105 m × 68 m is 0.714 ha, or about 1.76 acres. For plots sold in marla, the marla to square feet converter gives ft², and for building areas the square meter calculator works out m² from length and width.
Worked Example
A farmer in France lists a 12 hectare field for sale and a buyer from the US wants acres. Type 12 with ha to acres selected: the tool shows 29.65 acres, and below it 120,000 square meters, 1,291,669 square feet and 0.12 km². Now switch to acres to ha and type 40, a common US farm parcel: it shows 16.19 ha. So the French field is about three quarters the size of the 40 acre parcel.
How Do You Use the Hectares to Acres Converter?
Pick a direction
Choose ha to acres, or acres to ha if your number is in acres.
Type the area
Enter the land area. Decimals and commas such as 1,250.5 both work.
Choose decimal places
Use 2 for most land sales, or 4 for survey work.

The big number is the converted area, with m², ft² and km² below.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many acres is 1 hectare?
One hectare is 2.4711 acres, or 2.4710538 to seven decimal places. It equals 10,000 square meters, about 107,639 square feet, which is a square 100 meters on each side.
How many hectares is 1 acre?
One acre is 0.4047 hectares, or exactly 0.40468564224 ha. That is 4,046.86 square meters, so you need about two and a half acres to make one hectare.
How many acres is 100 hectares?
100 hectares is 247.11 acres. Multiply 100 by 2.4710538 to get 247.105 acres. 100 hectares is also exactly 1 square kilometer, a square 1,000 meters on each side, which is a large farm in most of Europe.
Is the hectare an SI unit?
No. The hectare is a non SI unit that the BIPM accepts for use with the SI. The SI unit of area is the square meter, and 1 hectare is exactly 10,000 square meters.
Which countries use acres instead of hectares?
The United States uses acres for almost all land. The UK uses both, with acres common in property sales and hectares in farming statistics. Canada, Australia and most of Europe use hectares officially.
How many hectares is a square mile?
A square mile is 258.9988 hectares, about 259 ha. It equals 640 acres exactly, and 640 × 0.40468564224 = 258.9988 hectares. In metric that is about 2.59 square kilometers.
