Kilograms show up on gym plates, airline baggage rules, European recipes and doctor’s office printouts, while most Americans still think in pounds. Type in either box and the other one fills in, so it works both ways. You also get pounds and ounces (handy for baby weights and packages) and stones and pounds, which is how people in the UK and Ireland describe body weight.
How do I convert kg to lbs?
Multiply kilograms by 2.20462 to get pounds. To go the other way, multiply pounds by 0.45359237, which is the exact legal definition of a pound. For example, 70 kg × 2.20462 = 154.32 lb, or 154 lb 5.2 oz. For a quick estimate in your head, double the kilograms and add 10%: 70 × 2 = 140, plus 14 is 154.
Kg to lbs formula
kg = lb × 0.45359237
1 lb = 16 oz · 1 stone = 14 lb
Since 1959, the international pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg. The 2.20462262 factor is just 1 divided by that number, rounded. For everyday use, 2.2 is close enough. It’s off by about 0.2%, or a third of a pound on 70 kg.

Weights you’ll run into
A standard Olympic barbell is 20 kg (44.1 lb), and the big bumper plates are 20 kg too, which is why lifters often round to 45 lb. Many US airlines cap checked bags at 50 lb, about 22.7 kg, and international carriers often use 23 kg. A newborn at 3.5 kg weighs about 7 lb 11 oz.

Why is a pound exactly 0.45359237 kilograms?
The pound used in everyday US and UK life is the avoirdupois pound of 16 ounces. Before 1959 its exact size depended on the country. Since the Mendenhall Order of 1893, the United States had defined its pound in terms of the kilogram, while Britain kept a physical standard pound, and the two differed by a few parts per ten million.
In 1959 the International Yard and Pound Agreement settled the matter for the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The pound was defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilogram. That number was chosen because it is divisible by 7, which makes the grain (1/7000 pound) an exact 64.79891 milligrams.
Because the definition is exact, the reverse factor is 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.20462262 pounds per kilogram, a repeating decimal that you round for practical use.
For smaller weights in the kitchen, the same definition gives an ounce of exactly 28.349523125 grams, which the grams to ounces converter uses.
How is the kilogram itself defined?
From 1889 to 2019 the kilogram was the mass of one metal object: the International Prototype of the Kilogram, a platinum-iridium cylinder kept by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) near Paris. Comparisons with its official copies showed tiny drifts of tens of micrograms over a century, a problem for a unit the whole world relied on.
In November 2018 the General Conference on Weights and Measures voted to define the kilogram by fixing the Planck constant at exactly 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ joule seconds. The change took effect on May 20, 2019. National labs now realize the kilogram with instruments such as the Kibble balance, which balances a mass against electromagnetic force measured through quantum electrical standards.
Your bathroom scale was not affected; the new definition was chosen to match the old one. But because the pound is defined from the kilogram, the pound is now also tied to a constant of nature rather than to a cylinder in a vault.
Is a troy pound the same as a regular pound?
No. Gold, silver and other precious metals are weighed in the troy system, which is separate from the avoirdupois system used for body weight and groceries.
| Unit | Exact grams |
|---|---|
| Avoirdupois ounce | 28.349523125 |
| troy ounce | 31.1034768 |
| Troy pound (12 troy ounces) | 373.2417216 |
| Avoirdupois pound (16 ounces) | 453.59237 |
The result is a common surprise: a troy ounce is heavier than a regular ounce, but a troy pound is lighter than a regular pound, because it holds only 12 ounces instead of 16. Both systems share the same grain, 64.79891 mg; a troy ounce is 480 grains and an avoirdupois ounce is 437.5 grains.
Bullion prices are quoted per troy ounce. In South Asia gold is often sold by the tola instead, which you can convert with the tola to gram converter. For body weight in kilograms, the BMI calculator accepts either unit.
