In the US, tipping 15 to 20 percent is standard at sit-down restaurants, and many people now tip 20 percent or more for great service. This tip calculator does the math for any bill, shows the tip and the total, and splits the check evenly between everyone at the table.

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. For a 20% tip on a $50 bill, 50 × 20 ÷ 100 = $10 tip, so the total is $60. A quick shortcut for 20%: move the decimal one place left and double it.

How much to tip in the US

Sit-down restaurants: 15 to 20%, more for excellent service. Bars: $1 to 2 per drink or 15 to 20% of the tab. Food delivery: 15 to 20% with a $3 to 5 minimum. Hair salons and barbers: 15 to 20%. Taxis and rideshares: 15 to 20%. Check whether a service charge is already on the bill before you add a tip.

Should you tip on the total before or after tax?

Etiquette guides generally say to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, because sales tax goes to the state and city, not to the restaurant or server. On a $80 meal with 8% tax, a 20% tip on the subtotal is $16.00, while 20% of the $86.40 total is $17.28. The difference is small, and many people simply tip on the final number for convenience. Either choice is acceptable.

A few situations change the math:

  • Discounts and coupons: tip on the price before the discount, since the server did the same work.
  • Comped items: consider adding their value to the tip base.
  • Split bills: work out the tip on the whole subtotal first, then divide, so nobody rounds the tip down twice.

To see how much of your receipt is tax, a sales tax calculator can back it out of the total. For other quick percentage questions, such as what share of the bill a fixed $10 tip represents, use the percentage calculator.

How are tips taxed and what is a tip credit?

In the United States, tips are taxable income. The Internal Revenue Service requires employees who receive $20 or more in tips in a month to report them to their employer by the 10th of the following month, and Form 4070 is the optional IRS form for that report. Under Revenue Ruling 2012-18, an automatic charge the customer cannot change, such as a mandatory 18% gratuity for large parties, is a service charge and counts as regular wages, not a tip.

The Fair Labor Standards Act, enforced by the Department of Labor, lets employers pay tipped workers a cash wage as low as $2.13 an hour and count tips toward the rest of the $7.25 federal minimum wage. That gap of up to $5.12 is called the tip credit. If tips fall short, the employer must make up the difference. Many states set a higher cash wage or ban the tip credit entirely.

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025 added a federal income tax deduction of up to $25,000 for qualified tips for tax years 2025 through 2028, reduced for higher incomes. Social Security and Medicare taxes still apply.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Etiquette experts usually say to tip on the pre-tax amount, but tipping on the total is common and simpler.

What is a good tip at a restaurant?

15% for standard service and 20% for good service are the usual US norms.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide the total by the number of people. The calculator does this for you.

Do I tip on takeout?

It is optional. Many people leave 10% for large or complicated takeout orders.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?

Not always. Ask the restaurant whether the service charge goes to the staff before adding more.
