Acres to Square Feet Converter: 2.5 acres shown as 108,900 ft² with m², hectares and square yards.

This acres to square feet converter is for home buyers, farmers, surveyors and students who need to compare plot sizes. Land listings in the US and UK often give acres, while house plans, zoning rules and building quotes use square feet. The tool uses the exact international factor, so 1 acre is always 43,560 ft² with no rounding.

How Many Square Feet Are in an Acre?

There are exactly 43,560 square feet in one acre. To convert acres to square feet, multiply the acres by 43,560. For example, 2.5 acres × 43,560 = 108,900 ft². To go the other way, divide square feet by 43,560, so a 10,000 ft² lot is about 0.23 acres, or 929.03 square meters.

Why Is an Acre 43,560 Square Feet?

An acre is 43,560 square feet because it was defined as an area 1 furlong long and 1 chain wide, which is 660 ft × 66 ft = 43,560 ft².

The acre comes from the medieval English idea of the land a team of oxen could plough in a day. The Gunter’s chain, 66 feet long, was the surveyor’s tool, and an acre is 10 square chains. Today the foot is the international foot of exactly 0.3048 m, so one acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 square meters. An acre has no fixed shape: a square acre is about 208.71 ft on each side.

1 acre = 66 ft × 660 ft = 43,560 ft² (exact)
ft² = acres × 43,560
acres = ft² ÷ 43,560
1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m² = 0.40468564224 ha

The US survey acre, based on the old US survey foot, is about 0.016 m² larger. NIST retired the survey foot for new work at the end of 2022, and the difference never shows at normal precision.

How Do You Convert Square Feet to Acres?

Divide the square feet by 43,560 to get acres, so a 10,000 ft² lot is 10,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.2296 acres.

To find the square feet of a plot first, measure the length and width in feet and multiply them; the square footage calculator also handles L shapes and circles. In Pakistan and India land is often sold in marla and kanal, and the marla to square feet converter turns those into ft², which you can then turn into acres here. For metric plans, the square feet to square meters converter gives m² directly.

Worked Example

A buyer is looking at a 2.5 acre rural plot and a builder quotes per square foot. Type 2.5 with acres to ft² selected: the tool shows 108,900 ft², and below it 10,117.14 square meters, 1.0117 hectares and 12,100 square yards. A neighbour’s suburban lot is 10,000 ft²; switch to ft² to acres and type 10000 to see 0.23 acres (0.2296 with 4 decimal places). The rural plot is almost 11 times larger.
