Minutes to Hours Converter on ToolsVortex with a worked example filled in
Minutes to Hours Converter: 135 minutes shown as 2.25 decimal hours and 2:15.

This minutes to hours converter divides your minutes by 60 and shows the result as decimal hours, as hours and minutes, and in seconds and days. Decimal hours are what most payroll and timesheet systems expect, while hours and minutes are easier to read.

How Do You Convert Minutes to Hours?

To convert minutes to hours, divide the minutes by 60. For example, 135 minutes divided by 60 equals 2.25 hours. The whole number is the hours, and the decimal part times 60 gives the leftover minutes, so 0.25 hours is 15 minutes, making 2 hours 15 minutes.

What Is the Formula for Minutes to Hours?

The formula is hours = minutes ÷ 60, because one hour has exactly 60 minutes under the International System of Units definition of time.

hours = minutes ÷ 60
leftover minutes = minutes − (whole hours × 60)

A decimal hour is a fraction of an hour written as a decimal, so 0.5 is 30 minutes and 0.1 is 6 minutes. Writing time as hours and minutes (hh:mm) keeps the sexagesimal, base 60, style we use on clocks.

Why Do Timesheets Use Decimal Hours?

Timesheets use decimal hours because pay is calculated by multiplying hours by an hourly rate, and a calculator cannot multiply 7:45 directly. Converting 7 hours 45 minutes to 7.75 hours lets payroll software work out wages in one step. The US Department of Labor allows employers to round time to the nearest quarter hour, as long as rounding is neutral over time. To total a full week of shifts, use our time card calculator, and to turn the hours into pay, try the hourly to salary calculator.

What Is the Difference Between 1.5 Hours and 1 Hour 50 Minutes?

1.5 hours means one and a half hours, which is 1 hour 30 minutes, not 1 hour 50 minutes. This is the most common mix up when reading decimal time. If you need the gap between two clock times instead, the hours calculator works it out from start and end times.
